Nearly 400,000 burglaries occur in the U.S. from November through December each year. Home security is always important but around the holidays it is even more. Burglars will scope out your home first to see what is inside. Don’t have gifts or expensive objects within view of the street. Don’t make it easy for an intruder showing them everything you have and where it is located in the home. The same thing goes with your curb. If you get expensive gifts, like electronics, don’t leave the box they came in on the curb where a burglar can see them. Take the boxes to a recycling center instead.
If you are leaving town for the holidays remember that burglars will look for things to indicate you are away. It is a good idea to ask a neighbor to look after your home while you are gone. Even simple things like picking up newspapers or flyers, shoveling snow on your porch or occasionally parking in your driveway. Make sure you have deadbolts on your main entry points. Use a bar in sliding glass doorways because an intruder can lift the door right off the track. Security bars can also be used in windows.
Always keep outdoor lights on to eliminate any places an intruder could hide. Motion-detector spotlight work very well for this. If you are going out of town install timer switches on your lights. You can use a timer in your living room and one in a bedroom to give the impression there is activity inside the home. You can also prevent hiding places for an intruder by keeping trees and bushes near the house trimmed back. Especially landscaping that is near a window or door. All of these home security strategies, in addition to a security system in your Calgary home, will protect you, your family and home during the holidays and year round. It is a good idea to be on the safe side, and invest in a security system.
